About Vrindavan

Vrindavan lies on the banks of the Yamuna in the Braj region of Uttar Pradesh, about 12 km from Mathura. It is one of the most important places of pilgrimage for devotees of Lord Krishna, with temples, ashrams and kunj gardens at almost every turn.

A typical visit covers darshan at Banke Bihari, the evening at Prem Mandir, the ISKCON temple, Nidhivan and the ghats along the Yamuna. Many pilgrims also walk the Vrindavan parikrama and visit Mathura, Govardhan, Barsana and Nandgaon nearby. Choosing the right area to stay saves a lot of time in the town’s busy lanes.

Best time to visit: October to March, when the weather is pleasant for temple visits and the parikrama. Holi and Janmashtami are spectacular but extremely crowded — book early.

Where to stay in Vrindavan

  • Near Banke Bihari Temple (old town)

Best for walking to Banke Bihari, Radha Raman, Nidhivan and the ghats. Lanes are narrow and very crowded, and vehicles are often restricted near the temple — choose this area if you want to be on foot, not in a car.

  • Raman Reti and the ISKCON area

Calmer and greener, with ashrams, guest houses and newer hotels around the ISKCON temple. A popular choice for families and for longer, quieter stays.

  • Chhatikara Road and Prem Mandir side

Wider roads, easier parking and larger hotels, close to Prem Mandir and Vaishno Devi Dham. Convenient if you are driving in from Delhi or Agra.

  • Parikrama Marg

Along the route of the Vrindavan parikrama, close to the Yamuna ghats. Suits pilgrims planning to walk the parikrama early in the morning.

How to reach Vrindavan

Festivals & peak season

  • Holi: Celebrated for days across Braj — the flower Holi at Banke Bihari, and Lathmar Holi in nearby Barsana and Nandgaon. Usually in March, and the most crowded time of the year.
  • Janmashtami: Lord Krishna’s birthday, usually in August or September, with midnight celebrations in every temple.
  • Radhashtami: Radha Rani’s birthday, about two weeks after Janmashtami, celebrated with special fervour in Vrindavan and Barsana.
  • Kartik month: Usually October–November. A holy month for parikrama and deep daan on the Yamuna, when many pilgrims stay for several days.
